summation convention

summation convention
in Cartesian coordinates whenever the same index (subscript) occurs twice in a term, that index is to be given all possible values (1 convention 3 for 3-D, 1 convention 2 for 2-D, etc.) and the results summed together. For example, eii=e11+e22+e33
